【物理性质】针状结晶(无水甲醇或氯仿), 熔点235～240°(分解)。1g熔于87ml水、3ml沸水 、6ml乙醇、100m乙醚l、10ml甘油及5ml丙酮。几乎不溶于苯、氯仿及石油醚。

【药理作用】
1.抗菌、抗病毒、抗真菌：体外对金黄色葡萄球菌、八叠球菌、α-型链球菌、奈瑟球菌、绿脓杆菌、弗氏痢疾杆菌、伤寒杆菌Hd、副伤寒杆菌Adeng有抑制作用，其抑菌浓度为5mg/ml。体外，在3%浓度下对17种真菌有抑菌作用，对流感病毒亦有一定抑制作用。
2.抗炎症、抗肿瘤、抗过敏、抗诱变：对吗啉加亚硝酸钠所致的小鼠肺腺瘤有强抑制作用。
3.其它：本品还有利胆剂和支气管扩张剂，可抑制胰岛素降解，促进平滑肌松弛。曾被用作收敛剂和止血剂。

【应用领域】没食子酸可用作显影剂，它的碱性铋盐用作防腐剂，也用于制药工业上。
